CCTV Tower - China's New Content Brewery
PICTORIAL - BEIJINGERS CALL IT DaKuCha
With 234 meters in height and 49 floors, China Central TV (CCTV) Tower looks chocking and hard to describe. Beside is the third tower (North tower), separate but on same platform, standing straight. It burnt in February 2009. Designer Rem Koolhass won architecture competion in 2002. CCTV Tower was completed in 2012.
CCTV Tower will be workplace for 10.000 Chinese content officers who are responsible for 250 Chinese TV channels. The cost will be $1100M, more than twice the Beijing Egg, National Grand Theatre of China.
I can see CCTV Tower from my home in Guangcai Mansion (Glory International Mansion). I got curious about its birth and went around it a few times with camera during construction period.
Beijingers have already given CCTV Tower a pet name, DaKuCha, Big Pants. More exactly DaKuCha means simple, loose, old-style boxer underpants, anyway convenient to use.

They are popular CCTV program hosts, society stars: Chen Weihong (business), Gao Bo (quiz) and XiaoQian (home decoration), and there are more. For Chinese, CCTV program hosts are part of extended family. They come every home every day, the opinions they give are valued and trusted. They have become role models and sort of model citizens in new China. Many ordinary Beijing homes have a big CCTV calendar on the wall, pictures of CCTV hosts for every month.
