Wow! Beijing Prices!

Above: LaiTai Flower Market, Beijing. It's everyone's favorite, just beside new U.S. embassy. Picture gallery below.

Let's learn some Chinese! This is a traditional discussion between the Chief and the Troops:
Tong Zhi Men Xin Ku Le - Comrades, you have done a hard job!
Wei Ren Min Fu Wu - We Serve The People!

_________

Quality problem - Siemens fridge. Made in China, door plastic broke. Service man to visit home, 2EUR, to change the broken plastic, 2EUR, price of new plastic part 2EUR: in all 6EUR. Service was quick, result almost like new.

_________

Quality problem - curtain rails. Rail and curtains suddenly dropped down! Plastic parts keeping rail in ceiling broke. New rail was 10EUR per meter, including installing work by a service man.

_________

Haircut in Beijing can be good (price/quality). I used to visit a 35RMB (3,5€) haircut in a saloon: just walk in, no wait, 10 minutes and ok. Recently I visited a better saloon, 64RMB: person had two assistants, one on each side of him, to give tools! Fancy place, 30mins, but just average result. Last month I went to 10RMB (1€) haircut, one seat barber shop beside public toilet near Silk Street. Barber-lady has been there for 16 years, foreign customers mainly from nearby embassies. Barber-lady was fast, max 8 mins, result ok. No disinfection of tools, a bit smelly place but not tickling head afterwards. I killed two mosquitos during the process.

_________

Goose feather quilt. You can watch when they make it at XiDan ShangChang department store 4F, a small shop with filling machine. Good quality quilt cover about 20EUR, top quality goose feather to fill 138EUR/kg, you need either 400 or 600grams to the quilt 150cm*200cm. Very good quality/price ratio, good experience.

_________

Quality problem - Canon. I bought Canon EF 70-200 F/2,8 L IS USM lens with 1600EUR. During the first week, white plastic around lens buttons cracked, by coldness I believe. Seller in Beijing said they can't do anything, that is my own fault. Canon persons in Beijing refused the warranty service. A Canon service person said: How can you prove you didn't break it yourself? Canon's service quality for cameras in Beijing is poor. My Canon EF 70-200mm lens is still broken.

_________

0,8% commission of the sales for shoe shop sales person
1,2% commission of the sales for clothes shop sales person

_________

4EUR to you for 30kg of old magazines, picked from home or office

SERVICES with these prices raise questions. Is service quality in place or is it sacrificed? Are service people making decent living with their work or do they have to seek other sources for making money?

In China most want to get rich soonest. It's not a parallel process, some will need to go first.

Manufacturing has been the first step towards that goal. Incomes are raising. Higher value-add is in seek. Chinese companies already seek presence in EU and U.S. Opportunities with services in China are raising. Professional house management? Quality child care and education? Medical care and managed elderly homes?
